I still have tons of trouble sleeping as I have to get up and fucking pee a lot during the night and my full bladder is really sensitive, so I contacted my neurologist to see if it's my neurological problems and am trying to get an appointment with my primary care doctor to see if it could be prostate issues. I had urology appointments in the past but they said nothing was wrong and I would ideally like a scan in that area or full prostate exam to see if it's some internal problem. I think I did feel some weird cyst near one of my testicles when feeling down there so I'll try to remember to ask about that as well if I do get an appointment. I'd also like another brain scan to see if my brain structure is any different since I'm off all that psychiatric goofenthal.

I started my laundry this morning and my washer/dryer had no problems though I had to make time for myself to try to put stuff away, another one of the mental things I'm going through.

I left early for Walmart to shop for a few things then went to the food pantry at the Christian House of Prayer in town where the parking lot was filling up, even over an hour before the event actually began. I ended up getting a lot of stuff like a pineapple, watermelon, and potatoes, and will try to buy a carving knife and skin peeler among other things next time I go shopping so I can render them in edible form. I also got a turkey and will buy a roasting pan and try to make Thanksgiving dinner for myself, and buy stuffing, and get an internal thermometer. I'll research proper defrosting and cooking techniques on AI so I don't screw up.

As I waited for my food I called Cigars International, where I placed an order yesterday, noting that a $15 coupon I won from a page roulette didn't apply when I thought it had, and while trying to check out Klarna searched for tons of other coupons that were applied but ended up jacking up the price, and I tried to cancel the coupons to where I thought I had only the $15, but the full price ended up being charged. I tried their online AI chat but couldn't get an answer, and the phone AI system didn't help either but I was able to get on with a live agent and he said he would refund me $15 in a few business days.

Nothing much else going on...

Sharing Feast

The Feast of Sharing last night was okay, and while there was a line to get in it moved quickly.

I sat at a table I had to share with other strangers.

Everyone stood and said the US Pledge of Allegiance. I don't say it since I consider pledging allegiance to a flag symbolic of a country that did evil shit throughout its history and whose founding principles I disagree with ("all men are created equal' and "merciless Indian Savages") to be idolatry (and that's a big no-no in Christianity. I'm more of a civic nationalist than anything else. We said the Texas Pledge of Allegiance afterward and I have no issue with it since it separates honoring the Texas flag and pledging allegiance to Texas.

They had a choir that was really painful to listen to, and I couldn't eat all of my food since I'm more sensitive to taste than I used to before.

As I was leaving a guy named Abhiram Garapati handed me a flyer and he's running for Congress, and I assume John Carter, who's one of the oldest members of Congress in his 80s, may be retiring. I agree with priorities so I'll likely vote for him in the primaries. I likely will be voting for another U.S. Senate candidate other than John Cornyn since he's pretty much equivocated on being MAGA in terms of past words and supporting much of the stuff Biden did. His two main challengers are Ken Paxton, who has a kickass record as attorney general but recently divorced so I think that may be used against him, and Congressman Wesley Hunt, whom I may likely vote for.

I brought one of my cigars and went to the town saloon afterwards to smoke it and have a Sprite Zero before heading home.

I'm not reading any more books until I finish Matthew Henry's Commentary on the Bible which I am reading along with my King James Bible. I had purchased The Gender Trap by Carla Curtis from Gays Against Groomers (since it's unavailable in digital form) and will read it eventually.

My sleep was meh as usual as I'm still impatient as fuck when sleeping, and my bladder issues don't help. I ordered a cheap sleep apnea nose thing from Amazon that I hope may help and am waiting on a bladder clip from Temu I hope helps as well. I think prostate issues could be at fault so I may see my primary care doctor.

The Catholic church usually has a food pantry giveaway on Fridays but I drove out and found they were closed. There is another one at Refuge Ministries in town that I've been to before so I'll go to bed early so I can get out early and hopefully avoid the large traffic if possible. I did go shopping for some stuff afterwards.

The church in walking distance of my home had a Thanksgiving meal though it wasn't very appetizing, but I still ate my fill.

I got two $100 payments for my clinical trial in Phoenix, and I found I will be getting another $255, so yay.

Mind's pretty much a blank today.

I picked up my new glasses today, and I like them. I am seeing better than with the old glasses, either because it's a slightly different prescription, because the old pair had gotten scratched, or some combination.

A few hours later, the lenses have gotten smudged, so I am going to clean them after posting this.

I stopped on the way home at New City Microcreamery, which now has a branch in Arlington Center, half a block from the optician's. After tasting a few flavors, I bought a pint of dairy cinnamon ice cream for myself, and a pint of vegan peanut butter for [personal profile] adrian_turtle, at her request.

Film Review - Oliver & Company

Why Should I Worry?

I may have heard about Disney's Oliver & Company, based on Charles Dickens' Oliver Twist, when advertised during the 1990s during the company's VHS releases of its old animated films but never really watched it in full until recently.

Oliver is a tabby cat kitten befriended by a Jack Russell named Dodger (voiced by Billy Joel), who becomes his mentor and ultimately leads him to a barge with his fellow canine friends, including Tito the Chihuahua (voiced by Cheech Marin). Their owner, a thief named Fagin (voiced by the late Dom DeLuise), is indebted to a loan shark named Sykes (voiced by Robert Loggia) and has three days to pay his debt or else.

As Fagin attempts to pawn some of his stolen goods, he has a run-in with the Foxworth family, whose child, Jenny, fears her parents won't be home for her eighth birthday, and she adopts Oliver to the chagrin of her poodle Georgette (voiced by Bette Midler). Fagin kidnaps Oliver back for ransom then about-faces and wants to give him back, only for unexpected events to occur culminating in the rest of the film's events.

While it does obviously deviate from Dickens' work, I found Oliver & Company one of Disney's more underrated films given its endearing characters, storyline, the star-studded voice cast, pretty animation, and nice musical numbers, and would easily recommend it.

The Good

  • Pretty animation.
  • Great soundtrack and musical numbers.
  • Cute animal cast.
  • Star-studded voice cast.

The Bad

  • Obviously deviates from the source material.

From [community profile] thefridayfive:

1. What's your favourite TV network?
I don't watch regular network television anymore just streaming, and I guess Disney+.

2. If you could create your own channel, what would it be?
One dedicated solely to shows featuring anthropomorphic furry characters.

3. What TV show did you watch as a child, that you wish they would bring back?
I don't know, nostalgia is a seductive liar.

4. What show have you always hated, and wonder why they ever made such a dumb show?
I used to watch The Simpsons but lost interest due to the whole child abuse and school violence things, which have largely been the stories of my life (though said "violence" was far more verbal and psychological in my case). I generally don't like shows that constantly reference current events, which makes them age really badly in reruns, and their longevity as a result seems really artificial.

5. What TV show's seasons would you buy on DVD?
None of them.

This has been a great week for podcasts, which I'm sure will spill into next week as I'm still catching up. And in particular I'm on a pre-modern history kick. So what's more fun than adding dragons to that? Wizards & Spaceships' "How To Write a Kickass Fantasy Battle ft. Suzannah Rowntree" looks at the myths and truths behind medieval warfare and how you can apply those to fantasy writing. Inspired by the research she had to do for her own novels, which are historical fantasy, and Russia's war on Ukraine, Suzannah wrote an accessible guide to writing battles for those of us who will probably never set foot in a war zone. She talks about who gets it right, who gets it wrong, and why you shouldn't leave your comfy castle during a siege.

Happy Friday, everyone!
As we wrap up another week of debates, deep analysis, and the occasional keyboard-smashing moment, it's time for something far more important than politics: beverages!

This morning, scientists* announced the results of a groundbreaking study aiming to settle one of humanity's oldest divisions: Is coffee or tea the superior drink?

*Scientists, in this case, meaning a group of very tired grad students who realized their grant money ran out three months ago.

Key Findings:
Coffee drinkers reported higher alertness, increased productivity, and a 97% chance of starting a sentence with "Okay, but hear me out..."
Tea drinkers reported lower stress, better digestion, and a 97% chance of saying "I could stop anytime I want" while brewing their fifth cup.
Both groups agreed unanimously that decaf doesn't count and that anyone who microwaves water "should be monitored".

Unexpected Discovery:
During the "peace talks", both factions bonded deeply over their shared distrust of people who say they "don't like any hot drinks". Negotiations immediately shifted from beverage supremacy to forming a unified front against these monsters.

Conclusion:
After hours of heated debate (and increasingly shaky hands), the panel reached a historic agreement:
Both coffee and tea are valid, noble, necessary survival fluids, and anyone trying to rank them must first drink a glass of water and calm down.

So in the spirit of bipartisan beverage cooperation, grab your mug of choice, take a sip, and enjoy a peaceful Friday! You’ve probably earned it.

What I was actually trying to do was to ascertain whether it was possible for me to have Venya being asked to play at Mass, in a nod to Nat being asked to play his violin to accompany the Sunday hymns at Plumfield. ExpandRead more... )

At any rate, I'm afraid I came to the conclusion that it seemed overall in the highest degree unlikely that homespun musical services would be going on anywhere at Bragelonne in the same spirit as those hosted by the Bhaers at Plumfield, whatever kind of religious observance did exist there (and there must surely have been *something* as part of the settled routine of life at that era?) If any singing went on, it seems more likely to have been by the celebrant[s] and unaccompanied -- and a country priest would probably simply read his daily offices, with or without a congregation to participate.

Book Review - An Appeal to the Young

November 20th, 2025 16:34

Peter Kropotkin's An Appeal to the Young is a brief leaflet where he asks youth what they will be, and asks theoretical questions about sickness and seeing doctors, mentioning things like that a lack of food and good nutrition can harm health--which modern doctors obsessed with pharmaceutical kickbacks seem to forget, and can be corrupt--and how youngsters should understand socialism. He says that landlords need rent because they tend to waste their money on pleasure, and that the domain of production would be transformed instead of going to exploiters. Most countries have oppressed and privileged classes, with artists using ideas to start revolutions--which I attempt to do passively. Masters can reduce wages, telling them to substitute other things in place, Kropotkin concluding that every tyrant on earth shall bite the dust. Overall, a great manifesto for its time that can still apply today.

More about Medicare

November 19th, 2025 18:45
redbird: closeup of me drinking tea, in a friend's kitchen (Default)
[personal profile] redbird
Following up on my post from Monday: [personal profile] adrian_turtle talked to a different advisor (also with SHINE, like the person we talked to Monday).

He told her that "CommonHealth" is a Medigap plan, which you can only enroll in if you are under 65 and on Medicare because you're disabled. They don't require you to have less than X amount of money or income, but the premiums are based on a percentage of your income, and for us would be significantly less than a standard Medigap plan. He urged her to apply by printing the form and sending it in with a cover letter saying that this is a CommonHealth application, because otherwise they might treat it as a MassHealth application, which is not what we'd be looking for.

Edited to add: the only part of this information that's relevant for me right now is the "special election period"--because I inherited money this year, while I could enroll in CommonHealth, it wouldn't save money and might cost more than a standard Medigap policy. I have made a calendar entry to check in one year, and in two years, to see if it makes sense then.

Standard Medicare Open Enrollment ends on Dec. 7th, making this seem urgent--especially if we want to trust it to the post office--but I remembered that the letter saying my current Medicare Advantage plan won't be offered next year said I therefore have more time to choose a new plan.

So, I opened a chat window at Medicare.gov, and ran into a weird bit of terminology. Open enrollment ends on Dec. 7th, but I have a "special election period" from Dec. 8 to the end of February. The agent wanted to make clear that if I don't choose a plan by Dec. 31st, I wouldn't have Part D drug coverage or a Medicare Advantage plan.

I then asked if the special election period also applied to Medigap, and they told me that Medigap doesn't have annual open enrollment, if you don't buy it within six months after starting on Medicare the private insurance companies don't have to sell it to you. At that point, I thanked him and said that Massachusetts has different rules, and I think I need to talk to someone from the state.

Lately, there's growing alarm in expert circles that artificial intelligence, especially superintelligent AI, could pose an existential threat to humankind. Thinkers like Eliezer Yudkowsky and Nate Soares, along with researchers like James Barrat, warn that if a "superintelligent" AI were ever built, one more intelligent than all of humanity combined, it might act in ways we cannot foresee. As Stuart Russell puts it: "We have absolutely no idea how it works, and we deploy it to hundreds of millions of people". The concern is that such an AI could gain control of communication networks, labs, even dangerous weapons, and because its "psychology" could be completely alien to ours, its goals might not include human flourishing.

Bill Gates has echoed similar worries more recently. Although, at first, he believes AI could bring tremendous benefits, he has joined guys like Elon Musk in warning that unchecked development might lead to serious risks. Gates argues for extreme caution, saying we must "not do anything stupid" as we march toward more powerful systems. These aren't just sci-fi fears: they come from some of the people building and funding AI.

sabotabby: (books!)
[personal profile] sabotabby
Just finished: Kalivas! Or, Another Tempest by Nick Mamatas. This was excellent—basically what I said last week, then it gets super weird at the end (much like Girls Against God did, except that unlike that one, I enjoyed the more narratively straightforward first three quarters of the book). I'm not educated enough to know if there are other authors besides, say, Silvia Federici, who really explore Prospero-as-colonizer, but I do think Nick might be the only one to tie that to a cyberpunk future, in particular our cyberpunk present where dystopia is driven primarily by billionaires' fear of death and fantasies of immortality. Which is to say there's a lot going on in this little book and you should check it out.

Currently reading: To Leave a Warrior Behind: The Life and Stories of Charles R. Saunders, the Man Who Rewrote Fantasy by Jon Tattrie. You ever read a bio of someone you've never heard of? It's an interesting experience. It's kind of shameful that I hadn't heard of Charles R. Saunders until his induction into the Canadian Science Fiction and Fantasy Hall of Fame this year, but that's kind of the point—he died broke and unknown and was buried in an unmarked grave before his friends and fans figured out where he was and crowdfunded a memorial. He was a Black author and journalist from the US who fled the draft and eventually settled in Halifax, and he pioneered the genre of sword and soul, which is Conan-inspired stories set in fantasy Africa. Again. Hadn't heard of it. Tattrie worked with and was friends with Saunders (he was one of the aforementioned crowdfunders) so Saunders' life story is interwoven with Tattrie's investigation into what happened to him and why. He also gets a big assist from Charles de Lint (!!) who kept all of the many letters that Saunders wrote to him. I am reading this for podcast-related reasons but I'm genuinely fascinated by this story and will probably check out Saunders' novels based on this if I can find them.
